If you have never experienced discovering dinosaur fossils, you need to try it! Come join us for a fully guided dino dig and make memories for a lifetime. We’ll be digging on a 34,000 acre ranch where tyrannosaurus rex, triceratops, hadrosaur, and many other dinosaurs have been found.
Keep what you find!
You are allowed to keep most everything you find. The exceptions to this are anything deemed to have “scientific significance” or “commercial significance”, which is typically any complete dinosaur bone, tooth, or claw. You will have the option to purchase most any fossil of commercial significance if you choose.
One day is not long enough to extract fossils. Many large dinosaur fossils can take multiple days to properly extract. That is why we offer multi-day tours. You will have a chance to spend time with our expert fossil guide to learn how to dig, identify, and extract fossils.
Stay right on site!
We offer accommodations as part of the package. Your group can stay in one of our camper trailers located near your dig site. These trailers offer a nice escape from the occasional afternoon rain shower or heat. Trailers are equipped with water, generators, and propane so you can cook most meals and recharge.
You will have Verizon cellular coverage at or near most of the dig sites so you can stay connected.
These are remote locations with no services. Plan to bring your own food and coolers or work with us to provide accommodations. Bring everything you need to be self sufficient. No food cost is included in pricing.
Guided Tours are available mid-May through mid-October
3 day tour - $1250 per day for 2 guests, plus $250/day for each additional guest above 2 (max 4 guests in 2020)
5+ day tour - $1000 per day for 2 guests, plus $250/day for each additional guest above 2 (not available in 2020)
Participants should be 10 years old or older because the digging requires focus and attention to detail. Younger participants that are extremely motivated to dig in the dirt for an entire will be considered. Please call to inquire.
What to expect in a typical day:
We are unique in that we offer tours that are exclusive to a group. You won’t be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a dozen strangers. All tools and training will be provided.Throughout the ranch we have numerous established microsite dig sites where fossils are located. These are sites where tens of thousands of years of dinosaur remains were deposited at the bottom of rivers and the inland sea into a gravelly layer of varying thickness. You will dig with a knife and brushing piece by piece into this layer to expose bones, teeth, etc. from dinosaurs, crocodiles, fish, turtles, sharks, and other living things from the late Cretaceous period. You’ll learn what is a rock and what is a fossil. If you get tired of picking away at the same spot and want to walk around to look for bones, that is a great option. You might make the next big discovery! Every year fossils are exposed by wind and rain, so every year we find new fossils that have been washed out of their resting place.
Weather can be a bit challenging as the ranch roads are often impassable when wet. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the summer months, and this is something that we always need to watch. By having our camps near the dig sites, we can avoid having a complete bust of a day due to weather. We also have dig sites near gravel roads for days that are rainy. If there is a day that you don’t get to go outside at all due to weather, we will refund that day or add another day.July and August temperatures can get into the 90’s and 100’s, but the average is around 90.
You can take large commercial flights into the cities of Billings, MT or Rapid City, SD. From there, you will need a 4x4 high clearance SUV or pickup rental to drive the highways, gravel roads, and ranch roads to get to the dig sites. Our guides are open to picking you up as well for a fee. Give us a call and we can help make arrangements.
50% deposit is required at the time of booking. The remainder is required upon arrival for the dig. Cancellation is allowed 30 days from the trip start date. Deposit is forfeited if trip is cancelled less than 30 days from the trip start date.
How many days do you recommend?
This can depend based on how experienced you are. If this is your first time, we recommend the 3 day tour. Digging dinosaur fossils is a lot of tedious work that requires patience. Some days can be windy and hot with sand blowing around on you. You might find that you don’t like it. Once you’ve fallen in love with digging then I recommend booking as many days as you can.
Will I really find something to take home?
All guests that spend a day digging will find common fossils from the Cretacious period. Many guests also take home some sort of broken dinosaur bone that has no commercial value. But it’s like fishing or hunting, some days you dig and find little, and other days you find a pile of bone stacked one on another making it hard to pull out one individual bone. Sometimes clients end up having to leave bone in the ground because they cannot excavate the entire mass in only a few days.
Can I go out unguided?
We don’t generally allow anyone out on the ranch without a guide. If you are a private collector and don’t need a guide, the landowner will still charge the same daily rate for a trespass fee, and you are still expected to report all findings and pay for commercially significant fossils. There are also various logging requirements.
